Walch Optics Christmas Tree UPDATE:
[twocol_one]

[twocol_one_last]
Well it has been an exciting week for the Walch Optics Christmas tree. The main source of this excitement has been the addition of some nifty Nikon camera decorations. The cameras are silver and red coloured. (very Christmassy) Not sure if this is a world exclusive like the aperture decorations, we have been in touch with Guinness, but no response as yet. We also asked them if this was the world’s tallest Christmas tree but alas that honour goes to a Christmas tree built in Mexico last year standing at 110.35 meters tall. Ours must a be a close second.

Nikon Df now available for pre-order.

[threecol_one]
Well the Nikon Df has been announced and we are expecting stock about mid-december. This beautiful camera camera combines the classic styling of a Nikon FE type SLR, with the latest digital capabilities of the Nikon D4. Aimed at photography aficionados with a sense of style and simplicity the Df looks like it’s going to become it’s very own modern classic.

‘Tis the season for baubles and apertures – A world first.
[threecol_one]
[/threecol_one]
[threecol_one]
Today we put up our Christmas tree on the front counter just like we do every year but with a little twist. I can quite confidently say that this is probably the only Christmas tree in the entire world right now that is decorated with lens aperture assemblies.
Somebody call Guinness. We also decorated the tree with little red pointy house shaped thingos that are advertising Canon’s “Summer Cashback” promotion.
[/threecol_one]
[threecol_one_last]
This is a first for us but I’s bet there is probably at least a couple of other Christmas trees sporting these decorations around the world as it is a national campaign. You will also find our regular gold and blue ball string type tinsel which I don’t think looks as nice as regular tinsel and the gold baubles which are pretty classic. Only one present under the tree so far this year, hopefully some more will accumulate before the silly season gets really silly.

[twocol_one_last]
Starting on November 1, Canon Australia photographic equipment will be covered by a local 24 month warranty. Warranty covers manufacturing faults and component failure. The warranty covers equipment purchased through the official outlets of Canon Australia including Walch Optics but does not cover equipment purchased from overseas. If you do ever have any warranty issue Walch Optics will send your equipment to Canon free of charge if it was purchased from us, or if we can, we may even be able to deal with the issue on the spot. Remember if you have any issues, please come in and see us. For more details on Canon’s warranty chick this out.
Basically, this means buying local is now an even better idea. Bonza.

[twocol_one]
[/twocol_one]
[twocol_one_last]
We like to invite you to the product launch and demonstration of the new
E-M1 hosted by Olympus Australia, and presented by Olympus Ambassador Karl Ludik at a Salamanca conference center.
Olympus have really impressed us with the original OM-D and really, the whole micro four thirds system so we are looking forward to dissecting the details of this new flagship model.
The event will provide you the opportunity to have a play with the new camera and get a detailed presentation of it’s new features and technologies from Karl in a nice comfortable setting with refreshments provided.
You don’t have to be an expert or anything, come along even if you’re just a little bit curious about the Olympus cameras or want to learn more about how they work. Plus you’ll be supporting your favourite camera shop Walch Optics by coming along too.
We need to have pretty accurate numbers to get the catering right so please RSVP via this facebook event page or directly to Francis via email – francis@walchoptics.com.au
If you have any further questions drop us a line 6223 8855.

The new Canon 70D is here.
[twocol_one]
The Canon 70D is here in stock as of last week, and after playing around a bit with it I can say I like it. It’s the first camera to feature Canon’s brand new 20.2mp APS-C DUAL PIXEL AF CMOS sensor. Wow that’s a mouthful. But it is worth noting what it means – Until now Canon have been using their highly acclaimed 18mp sensor in all their APS-C cameras such as the 600D, 700D, 60D since it was first introduced in the 7D back in 2009. This sensor still holds it’s own compared to the rest of the market which is why even after 4 years the 7D is still a great camera, but since the release of Nikon’s new 24mp sensor last year we have been looking to Canon for how their next generation of DSLRs are going to measure up. The DUAL PIXEL part describes a new focusing technology that works when the camera is in LIVE VIEW mode.
[/twocol_one]
[twocol_one_last]
Without getting crazy technical, basically light is split into two parts by the sensor, half is used to capture the image, and the other half is used to measure the focus. This is important because typically DSLRs have struggled to perform very well in LIVE VIEW or while capturing video. This new sensor allows the camera to focus pretty much as well as a camcorder, but with all the quality of a DSLR. I did some testing and the camera can certainly follow a subject as it moves towards or away from the camera. Also it doesn’t suffer from the random loss of focus during filming that we sometimes see with DSLR video. Couple this with Canon’s new STM silent focus lenses and I think we can claim this is a genuine innovation and not just a gimmick.
The build quality and operation is very similar to that of the 60D with updates including touchscreen, 7FPS continuous burst, 19PT cross type AF, WiFi, in-camera HDR, and IR off-camera flash control. This is Canon’s best crop-frame type DSLR on the market. Why don’t you come in and check it out, we’d be happy to give you a demo.

Arrived today: The Olympus PEN E-P5
They have arrived! Today we unpacked the new Oly PEN including the 17mm F1.8 kit with the new VF4. The PEN EP5 is packed with new features including focus peaking to assist with manual focus, (You have to come in to try it, it works really well) updated image stabilisation, new LCD, superfine focus points, WIFI with remote capture control so you can completely control the camera with your phone or tablet, the list goes on. Plus it has high performance specs including some that out-do the OMD. The camera can now manage 1/8000th shutter speeds and a flash sync of 1/320th, that’s fast. After playing around with it today I’m really impressed by the build – it feels great in the hand, very solid. The 17mm kit is a good idea also, one of the best things about the MFT system is the available lenses so it’s good to see Olympus supporting these fast primes. Anyone who wants the best IQ from their camera goes for this lens usually anyhow, so making the 17mm a kit lens is a natural choice for a premium kit. It looks great in black too. This kit also includes the VF4 which is the highest resolution electronic viewfinder on the market, all together this is a wicked street photography combo.
Of course the camera is also available with the good ‘ol 14-42mm kit or as body only both in black or silver. Come in and check them out while there’s some still left. We also have some nice glossy brochures for you to drool over.

Photography Seminars in Hobart
UPDATE 9.8.13
A new workshop has been announced for landscape photography.
We are happy to spend the time with our customers to get the most out of their camera. We often spend ages helping people with certain problems or projects. But we don’t run lessons as such. Here are four training seminars run by someone else which you might be interested in. They individually cover Portrait techniques, natural lighting, Photoshop processing, and studio lighting methods.
Check this out.
We just added some new items to our ebay store and we thought this little Canon self timer was so cool that we just had to share it with you. So we shot a ‘lil video.
Pretty nifty huh?
