Bring in your gear for a quick assessment and offer.
Times are changing.
WALCH OPTICS ANNOUNCEMENT.
Walch Optics to cease selling new photographic equipment and accessories.
Walch Optics is withdrawing from the retail marketplace for new cameras and accessories. We will continue with camera repairs and the sale and servicing of surveying equipment and microscopes. Our brief foray into film processing will wind up, but we are still happy to be a drop off point for black and white developing.
We will close over Christmas as usual, until 2nd January, and during January we will have a clearance sale of our remaining new stock. We thank all our customers for your business over the years, and the friendships gained during this time.
Q: What about Laybys, warranty and so on?
A: Walch Optics is still in business and will honour all warranty issues and support questions. We will still be available to answer questions about your equipment, and help you get the most out of it. All gear has always been sourced through the official Australian distributors so warranty is not a problem. Laybys can continue as normal.
Q: But what about the camera I just bought?
A: We realise that some customers would have made recent purchasing decisions based on an expectation of an ongoing relationship, product support and advice etc. Some customers could feel let down by this decision. Please understand that this business decision is based on the economics of the retail photographic market.
Q: What next?
Hobart is lucky to still have a specialist photographic retail shop in Stallard’s Camera House. Walch Optics will continue with camera repairs and the other non photographic aspects of the business.
Please note this is a particularly busy time for us and we will not constantly monitor or answer comments and messages, apart from, of course, questions about your equipment. Once again, thank you for your business, Happy Christmas, and Happy New Year.

Canon 11-24 f4 L Now In Stock
The world’s widest rectilinear zoom lens has landed at Walch Optics. It’s very big, but also very sharp and with minimal distortion. A stunning lens which is ideal for anyone shooting interiors, architecture or dramatic landscapes. Canon shooters finally have an answer to Nikon’s previously indomitable 14-24mm f2.8, The 11-24 maybe be a little bit slower, but the 3mm of extra width makes a huge difference.
Bring your Canon SLR in to take some test shots, or just get a feel for the way it handles on one of our demo cameras.
It’s expensive, but of course all that optical wizardry comes at a price. $3999 from Walch Optics, in stock now.
Canon Powershot G7X Now In Store
In what is possibly the most exciting compact camera news of the year, Walch Optics has received stock of the new Canon Powershot G7X.
Offering exceptional performance and image quality thanks to the large 1″ type 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 6 image processor and outstanding newly designed f1.8-2.8 4.2x zoom lens, The G7X gives you the ability to capture stunning images across any photographic situation. The bright maximum aperture enables separation of the subject from the background, which is normally difficult to achieve with a compact camera and makes for stunning portraiture with a professional look.
The G7X offers full manual controls and RAW capture, giving you total control over your photography. It also features a number of creative modes including Star Mode, which makes it simpler than ever before to capture dramatic images of the night sky. Full HD 1080p video is onboard, as well as Wi-Fi, NFC and simple connection to your mobile device for easy sharing of your creative efforts.
If you’re in the market for a high-end, powerful compact, come in and take the new G7X for a test drive. We’re just getting familiar with the camera ourselves, and will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Cactus Flash Triggers
Walch Optics has just received a restock of the Cactus V5 Wireless Flash Transceivers. Reliable, sturdy, and great value, the V5s make a fantastic alternative to some of the more expensive flash triggering options on the market. They can also be used to wirelessly fire your camera’s shutter and even autofocus your lenses, saving the need for an extra piece of equipment. The V5s come in a ‘duo’ pack of two transceivers for $85. That’s all you need to trigger one speedlight or studio flash for just $90. The more flashes you need to trigger, the more Cactus V5s you add. Dead easy.
New to Walch Optics is the Cactus Wireless Flash Transceiver V6. The V6 offers improved control, allowing you to remotely control the power output of up to 4 groups of remote flashes as well as offering TTL pass-through. The V6 allows manual flash power adjustments in increments of just 0.1 EV across certain models of flash, even if the flash doesn’t allow such fine control itself. Cactus have also profiled more than 30 of the most popular flash models across a range of brands, so the V6 can control their output levels with ultimate precision. If you use a flash that the V6 doesn’t know, it can learn the flash profile and to control the power output. The Cactus V6s are in-store now at $80 each. As with the V5s, you will need one transceiver unit for your camera, and one transceiver unit for each flash you wish to use together.
Both systems are compatible across brands, so if you jump ship from Canon to Nikon (for example), you won’t need to purchase a different set of triggers. Handy.
Come into the store the check the Cactus range out for yourself and ask any questions that you may have. As always, we want you to get the most out of any purchase you make.

Nikon Announces the D810
Nikon has just announced the latest addition to their professional range: the D810. Small increase in number, but a large increase in capability. Is it as good as a D800 and a D800E stuck one on top of the other? Quite possibly, but we can’t wait to actually find out. It has an all-new 36.3 MP sensor with no anti-aliasing filter but improved software to stop those pesky moire patterns. It carries the same EXPEED 4 image processing engine as the D4S, so it must be good in low light. The autofocus system has been improved, and the D810 can churn through full FX format 36.3MP stills at 5 f.p.s which is pretty impressive. The D810 is also set to be a powerful cinematic tool, with full HD 1080/60p video with much reduced moire, noise and false colour AND a pretty clever and sensible auto ISO control in manual video mode.
